Species Guides
Knowing your fish is the difference between a tank that survives and one that thrives. Whether you’re picking your first schooling fish or planning a breeding project, understanding each species’ temperament, water needs, and diet will save you time, money, and heartbreak.
We’ve put together guides for the most popular freshwater species we carry at Amazonia. Browse by category below to find care sheets, compatibility info, and practical tips from our team.
Freshwater Fish
Our freshwater fish collection spans community favourites and specialist species alike. You’ll find tetras (neon, cardinal, ember, rummy-nose), cichlids (Apistogramma, rams, angelfish), bettas, corydoras, catfish (bristlenose, whiptail), loaches (kuhli, clown), livebearers (guppies, endlers, platies), and gouramis (honey, pearl, dwarf). Each species has its own personality — some are bold, some are shy, and some will rearrange your entire tank if you let them.

Aquatic Plants
Live plants do more than look good — they absorb nitrates, oxygenate the water, and give your fish natural cover. We stock a wide range including foreground carpeting plants (Monte Carlo, dwarf hairgrass), background stems (Rotala, Ludwigia), low-light hardy species (Anubias, Java fern, Bucephalandra), and tissue culture cups that arrive pest-free and ready to plant.

Shrimp
Freshwater shrimp are brilliant algae cleaners and endlessly entertaining to watch. We carry cherry shrimp in various grades, Amano shrimp (the best algae crew you can hire), and specialty varieties when available. Shrimp are sensitive to water parameters, so check our guides before adding them to an established tank.

Snails
The unsung heroes of tank maintenance. Nerite snails are tireless algae eaters that won’t breed in freshwater. Mystery snails come in gorgeous colours and add character to any setup.
Featured Guide
Our latest in-depth species profile covers the Apistogramma cacatuoides ‘Super Red’ — a stunning dwarf cichlid with real personality. Learn about its care requirements, tank setup, breeding behaviour, and why it’s one of our favourite fish.
